How To Choose The Best Shampoo For Your Hair

Updated: Sep 18, 2020

Hey gorgeous! My name is Kia. Welcome to my blog! I'm a natural hair enthusiast turned master cosmetologist, hair loss specialist, and a full-time entrepreneur. So I asked you guys on Instagram if you had trouble choosing a shampoo for your hair. There was an overwhelming response of YES! This question was inspired by a client who I recently had this same conversation with. My client came and I noticed a little build-up on her scalp and when I asked her what type of shampoo she used she shared with me that she used a co-wash. I shared with her that she needed to start using a clarifying shampoo in her routine to remove the buildup on her scalp.

After I asked, so many of you expressed that you don't know what shampoo you should be using and the difference. So we're going to jump into different hair/scalp conditions and which shampoo you should be using.

Bleached/Lightened and Damaged Hair

Your hair has been through a lot and now it needs some TLC! Use products that are specially designed for dry, colored, or damaged hair. Please avoid shampoos that contain sulfates, as sulfate-based cleansers can be very harsh on fragile processed hair. I'm not a huge fan of co-washing however after your hair has been lightened it needs all the moisture it can get, so co-washing would be highly beneficial. This is an example of a great co-wash for recently bleached or lightened hair. Ola Plex is also a great system to use to repair the damaged bonds in your hair. Purple shampoo is also a must for lightened hair. Blonde hair tends to change and take on a brassy hue to balance that color purple shampoo is needed.

Product Build-Up

With all the gels, moisturizers, oils, minerals in hard water; chlorine, and chemicals from swimming pools simply put, your hair needs a detox. Even the waxes and moisturizers in some shampoos and conditioners can leave residue on our hair over time. This sludge can cause hair to appear dull, flaky, and limp. A clarifying shampoo gives your hair a fresh start by removing those deposits, restoring your hair's shine, softness, and manageability.

The majority of shampoos are formulated to cleanse gently they have fewer surfactants (cleaning agents) and more moisturizing ingredients. In comparison, clarifying shampoos are all about the cleaning: they contain fewer conditioning agents, and more surfactants, this allows your hair to get cleaner and allow your hair products to be more effective.

Dry Flaky Hair

When you have dry flaky hair you may need one of three shampoos, moisturizing shampoo, pH balanced shampoo, or medicated shampoo. If your hair has a mild case of flake you may need a moisturizing shampoo. For scalps that are only slightly dry with no itching, look for shampoo labels that promote moisture, hydration, smoothing, or curls. These products promote moisture retention and can be beneficial to your dry scalp.

Many people do not know that the pH levels of your hair will affect the health of it. It is necessary for you to properly maintain the pH balance of your hair if you want it to look healthy. The pH levels of the hair are between 4.5 and 5.5. It means your hair is acidic and your hair shines and looks incredible when the pH levels are at the optimum level.

Medicated shampoos are used best on overly flaky scalps and can be a result of fungus, bacteria, and inflammation. Dandruff is a result of over oil production and yeast build up on the scalp and requires more frequent shampooing.

Gray/ Silver Hair

Did you know gray hair needs help staying gray? From medications and sun exposure to harsh water and hair-product build-up, even curling irons; yellowish-gray hair has many causes. Using a toning shampoo, also known as purple shampoo, can make all the difference for shining, silvery hair. Just as we learned in our childhood art classes, purple and yellow are complementary colors, meaning they sit across from each other on the color wheel. In essence, by using a purple-toned shampoo, the purple pigments will neutralize any yellow that may appear in your hair.
